Vale Serrano, Brazil. The summer of 1992.
Nando is twelve. Edu is the fearless one, Bruno is the one with the good sense, and Julia, Bruno's little sister, is braver than any of them. Between the four of them, the worst thing in the world is a stolen Chicago Bulls cap.
Then a boy from their street dies, and the summer stops being ordinary.
By December they have built a treehouse, learned what a funeral is, and found out that when the four of them are together they can see things that are not there. A clipping in the local paper sends them into the old cemetery after dark.
What they witness there happened three years ago.
A girl named Laura was murdered in that town. Her boyfriend was arrested for it and killed in prison before he ever stood trial. Everybody in Vale Serrano knows what happened to Laura.
Everybody is wrong.
And the only person who can give four children the truth is the one adult who has been kind to them from the beginning.
