While enduring intense personal tragedy and a struggle with alcoholism, he chisels out a meager life working with Benjamin Franklin in Philadelphia. Leaving behind a trail of wreckage, Meredith makes his escape to the unsettled territory around modern-day Bald Head Island, NC. There, he works as a traveling journalist and explorer before settling down to carve a living out of the wild country around Cape Fear. This story, filled with adventure, trials, joys, infidelity, tragedy, and love, gives a personal face to the people who fought through the struggle of making a great nation.
