The Storm and Tempest: Hugh Meredith, Colonist

This historical novel is based on the life of early colonist, Hugh Meredith. His parents, devout Quakers, immigrated to the New Penn Colony in the early 1700's to escape religious persecution by the Crown. Growing up in the farming community outside Philadelphia, Meredith encounters a new cultures and beliefs that challenge his own Quaker roots. While enduring intense personal tragedy and a struggle with alcoholism, he chisels out a meager life working with Benjamin Franklin in Philadelphia. Leaving behind a trail of wreckage, Meredith makes his escape to the unsettled territory around modern-day Bald Head Island, NC. There, he works as a traveling journalist and explorer before settling down to carve a living out of the wild country around Cape Fear. This story, filled with adventure, trials, joys, infidelity, tragedy, and love, gives a personal face to the people who fought through the struggle of making a great nation.
