Although I'm a longtime fan of Whitney's work, this book left me with an unsettling aftertaste. As is the general rule with her novels, it's full of surprise revelations and family intrigue. (For God's sake, how does she come up with these dysfunctional, homicidal clans! A counselor would have a field day with some of her characters!) However, this particular work contains a familial twist that I found, well, icky. (I know "icky" is not a terribly literary term, but if I were the main character, I'd be pretty creeped out by the entire situation.)All the same, it makes for a fairly good read, with buckets of your standard Whitneyesque plot twists. And once all is said and done, the resolution makes a poignant statement about the power of new beginnings.
