The Small True Thing (The Long Memory)

Three words. Held against the name in the house, or held against the house. Sabel Weir has said it the short way her whole working life, and she is about to find out what thirty years of saying a small thing correctly and wrong at the same time actually costs.

In the spring, in front of the whole country, with her hands open and nothing in them, Sabel promised to recount every one of her four hundred and eleven entries herself, one at a time, before the year is out. She is behind schedule before she finishes the first house, and she hides it for five months. Then she reaches an old entry she has walked past on purpose six times, a debt she entered at seventeen years old, three words short of correct, and she understands what she actually did. A phrase that should have ended when the person it was made for died has instead followed the house itself down through everyone who has ever lived there since, faithfully, exactly, in the correct form, generation after generation, because the form she taught was small and wrong from the very first telling.

Nobody lied. Nobody drifted. Every mouth that carried it afterward said it perfectly. That is the small true thing: a country can repeat an error with total fidelity forever, and call the repetition proof that it was never wrong.

THE SMALL TRUE THING is the fourth book in The Long Memory, and it asks the question the series has been circling since book one from the inside of Sabel's own mistake: what do you owe the people standing inside a debt you built, when correcting it costs them everything the wrong form ever gave them, and leaving it costs you the only thing you have ever actually been, which is right. It introduces Sesi Brye, seven years old and already entered, and puts Dovin Rask back into the account properly, for reasons that will matter for the rest of the series.

Quiet, exacting, character driven post apocalyptic fiction about the difference between an error and a lie, and about what happens to a country that has never had to tell them apart.

The Long Memory series:

Book 1: The Unheld. A country that writes nothing down has to trust somebody's mouth instead.
Book 2: The Short Form. The short way to say a thing is not always the true way.
Book 3: The Marks for People. Every mark on a person is a debt somebody else agreed to.
Book 4: The Small True Thing. The small true thing is the one nobody thought to check.
Book 5: The Setting Down. Some debts are so old the only mercy left is to let them go.
Book 6: A Thing That Is Done. A thing that is done once gets done again, for better and for worse.
Book 7: The Way In. The one true thing in the whole country turns out to be the one thing nobody ever checked.
Book 8: The Next Fault. She built the only tool that could ever find her own mistake, and used it.
