The Sleepless Lamplighter

Seren Vale has not slept in three years.

Every night she walks the east bank of Morrowgate lighting four hundred and twelve lamps, so the rest of the city can sleep. Something took her sleep in a single night, cleanly, like thread drawn through the eye of a needle. Her healer gives her until the spring thaw.

Then a man dies screaming in his bed, four claw marks beneath an unbroken blanket, and Seren sees what climbs out of his window.

Desperate, she tries an old ritual and finds the Lord of the Dreaming waiting in a doorway full of stars: a god with a face made of light, who cannot lie but does not always answer. He offers her one night of true sleep in seven, if she will hunt what he cannot reach. Someone in the waking world is stealing dreams and stitching them into nightmares.

The trail leads to the old temple archive, and to a kind, clumsy junior archivist who cannot remember his own past and draws a map of the Dreaming every day without knowing why. Seren is falling for a god she has never seen and a man who cannot light a lamp, and she is beginning to suspect they are two halves of the same heart.

But the woman pulling the threads has a reason no grieving heart could argue with, and the last thread holding her nightmare together runs straight through Seren.

A standalone romantasy of stolen sleep, lamplit streets, and the light we keep burning for the ones we love.
