Plans are useful. Until reality has other ideas.
The Shape of What Happens is a collection of nine stories about the distance between what should happen and what actually does.
A woman trying to reach her sister's wedding ends up at the wrong one. A perfectly predictive city begins completing events before they happen. Soldiers discover that the map no longer describes the ground beneath their feet. A school evacuation plan works exactly as designed-and sends people toward danger. Farther out, ships, gates, artificial intelligence, and even death itself prove less orderly than anyone expected.
Moving from contemporary fiction through science fiction, speculative fiction, and the fantastic, these stories follow people caught between plans and consequences, certainty and doubt, systems and human behavior.
Sometimes disorder exposes a mistake. Sometimes it creates an opportunity. Sometimes it simply refuses to explain itself.
Because the world does not always follow the plan.
And neither do the people in it.
