One of America's most beloved storytellers, Father Andrew Greeley returns with an explosive novel about the corrosive political culture tearing apart America--and one man's family. Tommy Moran, an Irish Catholic kid from the West Side of Chicago, fights for the underprivileged on the floor of the United States Senate. Swearing off negative attack ads, Moran is determined to restore civility and compassion to American politics. But his opponents don't share his scruples. Almost from the beginning, Tommy and his family find themselves besieged by vicious personal attacks, false rumors and attempts at assassination As a freshman senator, Tommy must also cope with the temptations--both political and carnal--regularly thrown his way. The job takes its toll on him, but at least he has the support and love of his devoted wife, a daughter of Chicago's raucous O'Malley family. But the opposition that hits home the hardest comes from an unlikely source: his own brother. Father Tony Moran, a conservative Catholic priest, has never approved of Tommy's senatorial career, much to Tommy's dismay. So when Father Tony sides with Tommy's political enemies, it may be more than one man can bear. Can anything heal the rift between the Senator and the Priest?"
Greeley has to be a very good writer to risk publishing such a novel. Angels ! Do you figure ? I loved it. I read it once each year since publication.

The Senator and the Priest

I have read most of Greeleys' books. They have all been enjoyable but this one really topped them all. Since I am Irish and from the Chicago area, I always picture myself in his stories. You don't have to be Irish, Catholic or from Chicago but everyone and everything can be pictured in your minds eye. He brings in history along with recent events which really add to the story.
Great book for us Father Greeley devotees

I am sick of Publishers Review bad reviews. What do they know? They don't seem to like my friend Father Greeley. I like his writing and wait for each release, often ordering ahead of time. This one was my favorite to date. I always learn something from his writing, some tidbit of history or government. And one other thing, he writes good, life affirming stories. The characters come to life, are fallable and are likeable or dislikeable, but real. By the way, I have preordered Irish Linen. Keep it coming Father Greeley!
Another great read!

This long time fan is anything but disappointed. Greeley scores again! The Senator and the Priest is at once a metaphor of God's passionate love for all of us and a fervent plea for a return to civility in politics. The writing is clean and brisk. It's a pleasure to discover more about the O'Malley clan. Greeley reminds us that even the best of families suffer alienation and pain, but there is always the hope of reconciliation. I would have liked to have a deeper exploration of Fr. Tony's jealousy. The author certainly knows his city and his politics. My only complaint is that it is a fast read and leaves one wanting more. The publication at election time was propitious.
