Evangelism Through Spiritual Maturation

Keith Miller did not come from a background that encouraged sharing one's faith with other people. When he discovered greater spiritual realities for himself, he wanted to connect with other people who had had similiar experiences and even share his epiphany with "secular" people. What he discovered was that traditional evangelism had not been as effective as sharing from the heart once one has spent time in God's presence. Thus, he stumbled upon the idea of evangelism growing out of a personal encounter with Jesus Christ. At the time of the book's publication small groups were also being discovered. He describes the uncomfortable challenges of seeking to get people to open up, be honest, and bear each other's burdens. Miller ties in the right brain perspective on spiritual matters, discussing how some realities are perceived in an illogical (left brain) manner. On humility and not being the center of attention, he pointed out Jesus used salt and light to talk about His people, i.e., both are invisible, not calling attention to themselves. He writes, "When we have put the outcome of our lives in God's hands, we don't have to hide from people or to be as afraid to risk creative dreaming or loving" (p. 144). This is trust that God is in control of the events in our lives. The candor in this straightforward book is a snapshot of where one man stood at a given time in his spiritual adventure with Jesus. I'm sure he's grown since then, but the lessons he'd learned at this point are still valid for reflective inquirers and fellow adventurers.
