In the town of Adwa-of-the-Wells, they say a debt has a longer memory than the person who owed it.
Along an ancient salt road - from a counting-house in the dry interior, through a dozen tongues, down to the sea - fourteen tales circle a single unpaid debt: eleven measures of salt, owed by a household no one can find, written into a great cedar book and never settled.
A reckoner forgives a stranger by balancing the books rather than clearing them. A tax-gatherer spends what the road owes him. A woman who reads the salt pans swears the official history has the weather wrong. An apprentice learns that counting does not discover what is missing - it creates it. And a debt, left open too long, gets up and walks, looking for the hand that first set it down.
Each story stands complete and alone. Together they refuse to agree, until the reader is left holding several incompatible truths at once - and the last tale returns, quietly, to the first.
