The Runner: A True Story of Survival and Choice
A gun pressed into the back of his neck.
On his knees, folded over an old hotel mattress, sixteen-year-old Samuel Carter realised this could be the end.
And all he could think was - how had it come to this?
Less than a year earlier, Sam was a straight-A student, captain of his rugby team - a boy with direction, with something to lose.
But things don't fall apart all at once. They shift quietly, through small decisions, chance encounters, and moments that don't seem important at the time - until suddenly, you're somewhere you never meant to be.
For Sam, that meant sleeping on cardboard in the winter rain, moving through the streets of Kings Cross, and being drawn into the orbit of one of Sydney's most notorious gangs - where pressure, loyalty, and survival begin to blur into one, and getting out is never as simple as walking away.
At fifteen, there aren't many choices - or at least, that's what it feels like when you're in it. You learn quickly to make decisions that keep you going in the moment, even if they cost you later. Survival takes over. Silence feels safer than asking for help. And the line between who you were and who you're becoming starts to disappear.
At least... that's what you tell yourself.
The Runner is a raw and unflinching true story of loss, homelessness, and the quiet, almost invisible way a young life can unravel when no one is watching.
But more than that, it's about what happens when everything has already gone too far - and whether it's still possible to turn back.
Because when a boy is pushed to the edge, the question isn't just how he got there, but:
Does adversity destroy him...
or shape the man he becomes?
