The Rock

A planet orbiting around a star 127 light years away from the earth explodes. Because the explosion had been anticipated, the inhabitants of the planet had been catapulted into space in all directions, with the hope that some of them would land on another planet where they would survive. The inhabitants of the planet that exploded are highly intelligent organisms but have the general appearance of a gray rock. They also have the capability of surviving very long periods of time in an inactive state. This is the story of Ojiia, who travels through space for many thousands of years before landing on earth in south central Virginia on February 11, 1847. He remains undiscovered for more than three decades before a twelve year old girl named Mary Ellen is amazed when she hears a rock repeat something that she had just said. Ojiia quickly learns how to communicate with her. This story is about what happens next as others learn that this extraterrestrial being exists.
