Jude Connor's Idaho hometown is a place of strong values and high expectations. For those who fit into the local church's narrow confines, there's support and fellowship; however those who don't are faced with ostracism in this life and the continual threat of damnation in the next. Jude wants desperately to be saved, but he also feels a growing need to decide for himself how to live and who to love, leading him to question the church's teachings. Jude must search for his own path, even if it leads him far from everything he has ever known.
This was a book that truly dealt with a lot of issues of a young man growing up in a small community. The complex relationship he has as he is growing up with others really was exceptionally well described and developed. The church family, with their almost suffocating nature, was at times difficult to read. But, stick with the story, it comes together with a satisfying ending.
