The Relationship between Perceived Social Support and Self-Care

Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, particularly preeclampsia, remain leading causes of maternal morbidity and mortality worldwide. Self-care plays a critical role in managing this condition, and perceived social support may be a determining factor in self-care behaviors. This study aimed to determine the relationship between perceived social support and self-care in women with preeclampsia presenting to the emergency department.These findings reveal a complex, inverse relationship between perceived social support and self-care among women with preeclampsia. This unexpected result can be explained by phenomena such as "substituted self-care" or a false sense of security induced by high social support. Emergency nurses and healthcare providers should consider this complex relationship in their assessments and design interventions that both strengthen patients' independence in self-care behaviors and enhance their supportive networks. Further qualitative studies are essential to deepen the understanding of this relationship.
