Excellent collection of four (4) Doc Savage tales

Nostalgia Ventures and Anthony Tollin have teamed up to do a comprehensive reprint of several Street & Smith pulp heroes. At present, they are doing double reprints of The Shadow and Doc Savage. Shortly, they will start new series reprinting The Avenger and The Whisperer. All have complete pulp texts (no edits or removals, like past reprints), tho reset so its easier to read, the original illustrations, reprinted covers (one is used as the cover of the book, but both original pulp covers are shown on the back), and several additional articles and additions. Hopefully, they can succeed to reprinting all these characters in these new editions, they are all excellent. This volume actually has 4 Doc Stories. We have the unpublished in the pulps "Red Spider", which was first published by Bantam, "Terror Wears No Shoes" (May 1948), "Return from Cormoral" (Spring 1949), and "Doc Savage, Supreme Adventurer", the 'original' Doc story. The cover of "Red Spider" by Bob Larkin is used as the cover of this volume, with the original pulp covers of "Terror" and "Return" on the back. Original artwork from those pulps are also included, along with some good supporting articles. As noted, "The Red Spider" was never published in the DS pulp. Due to editorial changes (which you can read about it in this collection), it was killed, and Will Murray was able to find it and publish it. So here is your chance to read it again. Also with this story are 2 pieces of unpublished artwork that Edd Cartier had created for the story that also obviously was never published. Along with this story are 2 other Doc novels from the pulp, from the later period. "Terror Wears No Shoes" was during the post-war "Doc Savage Science Detective" of cold war thrillers. "Return from Cormoral" was from the final, 3-issue effort to return Doc (also done with the Shadow) to its pre-war glory days. Its the middle of these 3 stories, so is the next to the last to be published. And the fourth story is "Doc Savage Supreme Adventurer". Written by John Nanovac, Doc's editor, it was the basis of "Man of Bronze" that Dent would write, and so can be considered the FIRST DS story. It had only previously seen print in a small print fan publication in the 80s. Additional, this work has info from Murray that gives background to what was going on with Doc and the like. For someone who has the Bantam Paperbacks, its this other materials that would make one want to get this series. And finally gettings "DSSA" is just icing on the cake!

End of the Trail for Doc, Monk, Ham, Renny, Johnny & Long Tom

THE RED SPIDER is the jewel in this collection. The other two are the sort of standard detective yarns that the series turned into in the last stages of it's run (with the exception of the finale, UP FROM EARTH'S CENTRE). Doc rides a rocket to cross the Iron Curtain into Soviet Russia on a secret mission. This tale was discovered years after Lester Dent's death (the magazine was cancelled before it could be published) and first printed by Bantam in the 1980's. A nice story, entertaining.
