The Red Priestess, Book Two of the Way of the Tanan Bell, trapped in an alternate Grotto, finds an old Tanan rhyme that unlocks the secret to throwing fire. Her lack of knowledge using the Altar Stone present difficulties communicating the method to her friends. The image of Master Tob appears on the Altar Stone and he reports to Bell that he and other masters are confined in an alternate vibration caused by the Dead Wind. In the Butte, Noster, recovering from his confrontation with Bell sends his first in command, Bast, on a subversive mission to the City with an addictive mushroom tea which takes a devastating toll on the City troop. Bartok, elected Speaker for the City, falls under the spell of the tea and has difficulties dealing with the City Council lead by Artist Kara Sagra. On Solitary Mountain young Scouts Olive, Rose and Clay meet Tanan master Mother Yil and her intelligent bird, Papa Crow. Together they endeavor to defend Mother Yil's home from the Blood Riders. While attempting to penetrate Noster's stronghold, the Butte, Scout Jana takes an energy blast from a Blood Rider casting her into the swamp. The blast collapses the tunnel entrance and Scout Big Red and Slim are trapped inside the Butte, forced to carry out their mission alone. The unconscious Jana is rushed to the care of Boh, a mistress of the Blood Magic. Bast returns to the Butte to lead Noster's army against the City. Must Bell sacrifice her life to stop Noster?
