England, 1663When Katherine Welles saves the life of a highwayman, she realizes he may be the only avenue of escape from a betrothal to her villainous neighbor. But traveling under the protection of a... This description may be from another edition of this product.
I am a romance reader from way back and I love the journey people take on the road to their Happily Ever After. I am normally a contemporary romance reader, so I was a bit worried about taking on a "Restoration Romp". I shouldn't have been. The Raven's Revenge is a well written, engrossing book that leads you along and gets you invested in the lives of the two lead characters, Katherine and Nicholas (who is known as The Raven). She is a strong woman, who leaves her home for the unknown, when being forced into an arranged marriage. He is a former Earl, trying to get his ancestral home back. Their meeting and their interactions are wonderful and their final HEA comes unexpectedly. Charles II, King of England, makes several appearances and is a joy to see. I totally loved this book.
Swashbuckling, sexy, and smart

I'm always skeptical when I pick up a romance novel, because I've come to dread the bad writing I usually find therein. No such worries with this book! The story drew me right in from the start. It's like a well-drawn, fun, historical chick-flick in book form. Hero and heroine are realistically human (not annoyingly perfect), with terrific chemistry. Black sets her scenes beautifully, throwing in the proper historical details so subtly that you hardly even notice you're being educated as you read a sexy romance. Best of all, she's got a sense of humor, which is quite fitting for such a rollicking era as the Restoration in England. Stand and deliver! And enjoy.
Romance and adventure

The English restoration has begun. Puritans are busy trying to look like royalists and the returning Cavaliers are trying to regain all they have lost. It is a fascinating era and Ms. Black brings the conflicts to life. Dutiful daughter, Katherine Welles, rebels against the marriage planned by her Puritan father. When she secretly saves the life of Nicholas, the Raven, a flamboyant highwayman on the rampage among the local nobility, she sees her way out. In return for saving his life, he will deliver her to her sympathetic aunt in London. Raven has his own agenda. His family fled with Charles the II to France and lost the land the Welles now own. He's back to restore his fortunes, or obtain revenge. Ms. Black leads us on a mad romp from the wilds of Dorset to the court of King Charles with a lass determined to shake off her unpleasant suitor and a man whose deprivations and the revenge he promised his father have stolen his ability to feel any gentler emotions. Or so he thought until Katherine, the woman he is about to betray, begins to melt the ice around his heart. What will happen when she discovers the truth? A great story in an unusual era with lots of twists and turns to keep the reader on her toes. Can't recommend it enough.
Adventure and Romance in Restoration England

A courageous heroine in peril, a sexy, flawed hero, and a cruel villain: perfect ingredients for a rousing romance about betrayal and the power of love. The Raven's Revenge brings Restoration England to life. Katherine Welles' Puritan father plans to force her to marry a man she loathes, so she runs away with the help of a handsome highwayman known as the Raven. But the Raven has his own reasons for helping Katherine: she is a tool by which he hopes to recover the land her father owns, land which rightfully belongs to the Raven himself. I love stories about the Restoration era. Charles II himself shows up more than once in this one, and is instrumental in bringing about an unexpected and original conclusion.
