This guide offers the aspiring or beginning meditator an understanding of the fundamental elements of the different teachings, techniques and methods of meditation.
This is a great starting point for anyone interested in understanding meditation or Eastern thought-processes. It is not unilateral and provides insight for the Western mind into Eastern practices. The idea to write about this subject with an allegory is - in my humble opinion - brilliant. I appreciate MacWhinnie's gentle approach toward a touchy subject when relating Christianity to meditation. In summary, I would recommend this book to all of my friends, regardless of their religion, as an introduction to the world of meditation, with an emphasis on the difference between Eastern and Western minds. And the fact that it begins with a fairly tale makes it a simpler story to tell.
Radiant Kingdom -- a little gem awaits you

Loved the story, and realised how it related to my experience of meditation. My reactions were normal (therefore I wasn't a failure at something that's supposed to be so easy) it was just the busy monkey-mind getting in the way of me connecting with the inner silence. Once I understood that I got going with meditation again -- thank goodness. Certainly helps me in my life. I've gone back to the story many times -- have used it in explaining meditation to others -- and urged them to buy this book to take their understanding further. It is a little gem. Unpretentious, sincere and written with integrity. I've always been suprised that more people haven't heard of it -- sounds like it is time to get the word out.
