Compelling and brutal read

3.5/5 stars While the book had an extremely powerful message and story, sometimes the point got lost in translation with the over description and the amount of times POVs got switched. Samuel and Isaiah story and love were the main focus but there were so many other great characters. Yes this book is brutal. It does not sugar coat anything. The author doesn't gloss over the issues that slaves faced or the brutality that was their lives. There was abuse, torture, and so much more. It broke my heart what they were forced to go through. And then poor Samuel and Isaiah being betrayed not only by Amos, but the rest of the slaves, was beyond infuriating. But I know this was a real a true part of life for slaves. It's incredibly powerful book. Though, it does lose points because there were better ways to write and things should have been edited down. Powerful story. And I think it is a must read for everyone.
