Social implications of theological beliefs

Tanner's goal in this book is to show how traditional theological beliefs can be used to support a progressive social agenda. She does so through a process of internal critique of some commonly held Christian beliefs. She begins by affirming the transcendence of God and God as creator. She then argues that on the grounds of these beliefs, a fixed hierarchy of people is unjustifiable. Oppression and injustice must be opposed as all are children of God. Therefore, all people must be given respect. Further, differences must be respected, since the transcendence of God implies that we will never be able to judge fully. Activism is advocated, provided that it remains humble in light of human sinfulness. This is a wonderful book for those who are seeking a way to understand justice in light of Christian beliefs. If you are interested in the practical application of theology, this book is for you.
