Written English uses 26 letters to represent 40 speech sounds. The relationship of alphabet letters to speech sounds is not one to one. In fact, the relationship can be perplexing, especially if you think the alphabet letters are the starting point. Alphabet phonics is based upon the alphabet letters as the starting point for learning the sounds of English. This approach works for less than half the words in the English language and is not effective. We need a new approach to phonics that's easy and accessible. It's important, because although some research concludes that alphabet phonics is helpful to a large number of people, it isn't helpful to others; it actually holds these others back. They are confused by the incongruity and without a different approach may learn through compensatory strategies that may not serve them well over time. They need something different than alphabet phonics from the start! I have something different. It's explicit phonics that anyone can understand.
