The Patron Saints of Maple Falls

The book opens during the summer of 1985, in a Midwest tourist town in the called Maple Falls. This story takes you back home. Through hockey games, pup tent camping and convenience store trips for a box of Screaming Yellow Zonkers and the main focus on the story, that of young love. Sloan is our linear; embedded co-narrator who has quite the tenacity with her fascinations. On the rink, or with her guitar. Sloan falls in love with Hal, our journal entry narrator who is a city kid who has just moved across the lake from Sloan. He grew up pretty poor and has quite the descriptive look on his emotions and the eyes he has for Sloan. Sloan's twin brother has an endless possibility of intelligence, but quite the eccentric heart of the gang. He hosts his own pirate radio station, carved his own violin and can name every plant he walks past. Joan, the cousin, is the stern reserved one. She'd rather be sailing or diving in the lake as she dreams for the ocean. Though like her relatives, she has quite the heart and is a rainbow in hard times. This is a relaxed and goofy story. Like when your daydreams run wild, but it all comes back to a cozy home. Through this town of no clocks and embraceable love through canoe drifts, Prince concerts, overthrowing the king at the renaissance festival, a 91 year tradition of combing the lake for bones of yuletide outlaws. Through the stories the point is to love not just the main characters, but everyone in this town. Hell, even the milkman has a story. There is no villain, the only conflict is either loss of a loved one or confusion in placement of life. The book was inspired by the author's own life. Growing up poor and vacationing in tourist towns around the state. The book is also inspired by those hard feelings of first love during wild summer nights. Whether it was shared love of strumming cheap acoustic guitars to first poorly rolled joints, or breaking into places during midnight hours...and smoking poorly rolled joints.
