The Horrors of Loch Merse

The Origin of the Crabs: Novel Review Grade: B ...Are a lot scarier than the horrors of the other Loch, Loch Ness. For Loch Merse has giant, hungry, killer crabs...and they are coming out of the water to eat. The third book in Guy N. Smith's Killer Crab series, (there are six of them: Night of the Crabs, Killer Crabs, this one, The Origin of the Crabs, Crabs on the Rampage, Crab's Moon, and Crabs: The Human Sacrifice) Smith tells us, well, the origin of the crabs. Although it's still not really an origin story, (I expected to find out just how the crabs became so big) The Origin of the Crabs still manages to tell the events leading up to Night of the Crabs. Smith does this in 186 pages-and does it fairly well. Bruce is the owner of a large estate-it includes a village, a hotel, the lake, a few lone houses for his men, ranches, and assorted hunting areas-and he now has a big problem. There are giant crabs in his lake, and he's trying to keep them covered up, before all of his best guests arrive for a weekend of hunting. A poacher first encountered sole crab, and almost died in the process. Then his assistant was mauled by the crabs. Soon there will be more victims...and Bruce is just trying to find a way to stop the crabs, before time runs out. Of course he fails, of there would be no Night of the Crabs, and no Killer Crabs series. And yet somehow, I still found myself thinking 'how is this story going to be wrapped up in just 30 more pages? 20 more pages? 20 more pages? And then I remembered that this was a prequel; it didn't have to be nicely wrapped up. So read The Origin of the Crabs before you read Night of the Crabs, ans make sure you don't expect a stand-alone Crab story. But don't expect an excellent Crab story either-Origin of the Crabs has its fair share of problems. The biggest one though was this: I didn't really get into the novel. I limped along the first half of the book, and only really got into it the last 80 or so pages. The first half was just boring I guess; it's just crab attacks and talking. Only the poachers scene is worth reading in the first 75 pages. But then the novel really picks up, and the crab attacks come fast and sharp, ready to slice you in half with their claws. Guy N. Smith really has a thing going on with his giant crabs, and the next book-Return of the Crabs-is due by this summer. I'll be waiting...

The best giant crab book I've ever read!!!!

The part where the giant crab cut that guy's arms and legs off was cool but I wish Mr. Smith could have thought of other ways to kill off the characters because he kept using it over and over. It's very good stuff though. I wish there was more sex too. I sure hope the crabs don't cut off my arms and legs

Proof that Guy N.Smith is a brilliant writer.

One of the follow-ups to 'Night of the Crabs', this tells of the events leading up to the events in that best-selling paperback. The setting this time is a scottish loch which provides an excellent atmosphere and some good comparisons with the Loch Ness Monster mystery.Overall, this is a fine tale, an excellent novel without so much as a sentence of plot-padding. There are strong characters, some genuinely chilling and tense scenes and truly menacing monsters. A must for lovers of monster-rampage stories or just horror in general.
