"The Nature of the Visual Illusion" does a pretty decent job of characterizing and explaning exactly what the title implies. I like how this author involved some alternative concepts other than the same old optical illusions that we see all the time. He covers basic visual functions more. I also recommend "the science of illusions" by Jacques Ninio.
