Norma Leiber wonders when her life became a clich ... Lonely girl from the big city moves to small town and tries to fit in with geeky locals. But things quickly become interesting when she stumbles upon the most unpopular children at Bullfinch School only to discover that these outcasts are actually mythological beings This unusual group (unicorn, mermaid, faun, dragon and harpy) all mask their true identities behind magical glamours created by their mysterious teacher, Ms. Link. Norma is strangely drawn to these children who call themselves the Mythfits. And she soon finds herself in the middle of a supernatural conflict that will change the lives of everyone around her.
I recently brought Gary Goldstein's The Mythfits along on a New York to LA plane ride. I had not flown in some time and never enjoyed it, but this book made the time fly. Literally, which is obviously the best way for a book to accomplish that. I absolutely loved the story and fell in love with the characters. The Mythfits is truly a delight from beginning to end. My thanks to the author for his imagination, wit, insights into human nature -- and for taking the fear out of flying. I am looking forward to meeting the Mythfits again in Mr. Goldstein's next book. I'll be watching for it -- and so will my grandchildren!!
A tale for children and grownups

With imagination and style Gary Goldstein's "Mythfits" explores the difficulties of growing up, acceptance, and love. Themes of tolerance and kindness in the face of an often threatening world undergird this imaginative story of courage and community. Set in a small California town, inhabited by a most interesting array of characters, this book is great to read aloud as well as silently.
A highly imaginative look at coming of age

"Mythfits" creatively takes the notion of each child being "special" to new levels. With an engaging story that captures both the wonder and sometimes the struggle of growing up, the book is a joy. It has it all: magic, mystery and a sense of whimsy--all with some important lessons about life and living. I highly recommend it to "kids" of all ages.
