a solid romance with compelling characters and believable circumstances

Courtesy of CK2S Kwips and Kritiques Alicia Montoya's brother is her only family after their parents' death. As a Mexican with traditional family values, Alex takes his responsibility for protecting Alicia very seriously. He is set against her moving out on her own and is always scaring off potential suitors for Alicia. It's no wonder she's kept her current flame, Rick Jones, secret from Alex. When someone sets their barn on fire, Alicia turns to the one man besides her brother she trusts to keep her safe. Now she plans to use her wiles on Rick to finally lose her virginity. Rick Jones is actually Justin Dupree, a rich playboy who is undeniably attracted to Alicia. He is starting to wonder if it's time to give up his wild ways but there's one slight problem... Their entire relationship is built on a lie. When Alicia discovers his secret sooner than he anticipated, Justin will do whatever it takes to win back the heart of The Maverick's Virgin Mistress. I've been a fan of Jennifer Lewis ever since her first book was released a few years ago. She always delivers a solid romance with compelling characters and believable circumstances. Location always plays a key role in Jennifer's stories, and in her installment in The Texas Cattlemen's Club, we see a little bit of ranch life in Texas, through Alex and Alicia's eyes. Whoever would have imagined the cattle industry was so competitive? We also see some big city life through Justin's experiences. We have just the right balance of stage setting, to get a vivid picture of the Justin and Alicia's world, without detracting from the heart of the tale... the romance. Alicia is slightly naïve, due to Alex's protectiveness, so she's not exactly sure how to handle someone like Justin. When she discovers his betrayal, she begins to realize that there was more to Justin's isolating her from his family and friends than she imagined and is angry with herself for the precious gift she gave him. Justin is worldly and highly experienced, loving Alicia all the more for how far removed she is from his former bachelor life. Justin and Alicia are the perfect example of opposites attracting and this makes their relationship even more intense and emotional. While there is an undercurrent of suspense and tension to The Maverick's Virgin Mistress, the mystery is understated so it doesn't overpower the story. None the less, we are kept guessing as to what is to come as a result of the arson on the Montoya ranch. It becomes apparent fairly early on that this whole mystery is unfolding throughout the entire The Texas Cattlemen's Club series and the truth will not be revealed until the final book. Don't let that fool you though, the story of Justin and Alicia is complete and stands alone, with only the subplot carrying through to the rest of the series. While I had not originally intended to read the entire miniseries, having only chosen to read The Maverick's Virgin Mistress because I enjoy Jennifer Lewis's writing, I may

Passion and intrigue

The Maverick's Virgin Mistress by author Jennifer Lewis is an impressive and spectacular addition to the Texas Cattleman's series with sizzling passion and intrigue. As the author states in her introduction, Alicia Montoya is a 26-year old virgin who has been raised in a convent and sheltered by her older brother Alex Montoya. She's met a member of the famous Texas Cattleman's Club, a very handsome and charming man by the name of Rick Jones who is hiding his true identity. A fire breaks out at El Diablo, her brother's ranch and it presents the perfect opportunity for Alicia to explore her relationship with Rick, so she lies to her brother and seeks the protection of Rick at his hotel room for a few days. Yes her innocence is sweet but her attempt to change that status and how the author portrayed their joined passion was beautiful to read. Rick Jones is actually Justin Dupree, a man known as a very rich shipping magnate, one that dates high profile women and goes by the alias because of the press. Women when they become aware of him usually will go to any lengths to become his next girlfriend due to his wealth. Alicia is a breath of fresh air and he wants to get to know her not as Justin but as Rick Jones. He decides to take it slow but Alicia has other ideas, she wants a relationship full of passion and I promise you Justin delivers and their romance begins immediately at his hotel and sizzles right off of the pages. It's sweet, tender, romantic and full of passion. However, what was so special about this man as he took the time to get to know Alicia and was surprised by her passion for the town's historical society to preserve Somerset and her occupation as the museum's curator. When I originally read the series years ago, there was always intrigue and this book is no exception. The fire set at Alicia's ranch is under investigation for arson and Justin's friends who have also suffered an arson fire think Alicia's brother Alex is involved. However, there's more, Alicia has talked about her brother to Justin and when she finds out through a friend he's lied about who is actually is, then the fireworks begin. Alicia is devested by the lies Justin has told her even though he was going to tell her who he was upon his return from a business trip. This man, who has not trusted, realizes what they've shared together is important plus her sweetness and caring personality makes him realize she's the "real deal" and that he adores her. One is left to wonder if they can find happiness, forgiveness and will Alicia's brother come to terms with her having a man in her life. The Maverick's Virgin Mistress was the "real deal"; it's a love story that could happen anywhere in the world, a beautiful and emotional love story with a happy ending. About the Series: The original series began in 1999 and ended in 2005 and then began again in 2009. Texas Cattleman's Club, subtitled Red Hot Millionaires of Maverick County. Since her parents' deaths Alicia Montoya has been raised by her overprotective brother Alex. Like many traditional Mexican males Alex believes strongly that a girl doesn't leave home until she marries - unfortunately he's also doing his best to scare off any potential suitor as well. Since she's not about to let Alex run off her new boyfriend Rick she's opted to keep her relationship with him secret. When a fire destroys the historic barn on the El Diablo ranch arson is suspected and Alex insists that Alicia isn't safe at the ranch. He wants her to stay with one of his oldest friends, `El Gato', a suspected drug trafficker. Alicia has a better idea of where she can stay - though she's certainly not going to tell Alex her true plans. She fully intends to ask Rick if she can spend the night with him - maybe then they could do more than hold hands. Justin Dupree, A.K.A. Rick Jones, never meant to deceive Alicia. He uses his alias to avoid publicity and the Gold Diggers interested only in the Dupree shipping fortune. There's something very special about Alicia and he instinctively knows that she will not take his deception lightly. Unfortunately he can't quite bring himself to tell her - and after bringing her back to his hotel suite the timing just never seems right. After a loving night in Rick's arms and finally losing her virginity Alicia is on cloud nine and ready to shout her love for Rick to the world, yet she doesn't understand why he won't introduce her to his friends and doesn't go out in public with her - until she views his picture in a magazine and discovers his true identity. Could she really be such a bad judge of character to have fallen for this maverick and how can she ever trust him after such a stunning betrayal? MAVERICK'S VIRGIN MISTRESS is the fifth book in the TEXAS CATTLEMAN'S CLUB series. From the first page Jennifer Lewis immerses the reader in the Mexican heritage and the unique dynamics between the members of the Cattleman's Club. I was amused by Alicia's innocence and determination to `become a woman' despite her brother's controlling attitude. Even Justin's deception was understandable though he really should have told Alicia his true identity sooner than he did. In addition to the romantic conflicts taking place between Alicia and Justin there's the protective attitude of her brother and the whole arson issue that keeps this story hopping and the reader guessing at what will happen next. Jennifer Lewis pens stories that touch the heart and capture the reader's imagination while allowing you to feel like the characters are personal friends.
