Fifty vivid true-life accounts from the Great Age of Exploration, in the words of the intrepid adventurers who survived to tell the tale. Inspired by Sir Ernest Shackleton's account of his Antarctic... This description may be from another edition of this product.
I bought this book on a whim at a garage sale and it languished on my shelf for a while after, but when I finally picked it up and started reading, I discovered that it's a gem of a book. Best fifty cent item I've ever bought! I have thoroughly enjoyed all of the stories, all of which are about real events and written by the people who actually lived them. The stories are exactly what the title says -- stories of astonishing endurance & adventure. Some of them make me wonder why anyone in their right mind would attempt what these people are attempting, but that willingness to try to accomplish what seems impossible is the essence of true pioneers. If you enjoy stories about life lived at its outer limits, you will find this book very satisfying.
