Book Overview

"The Magic Garden" is a poignant and enchanting novel that explores the transformative power of nature and the enduring strength of human connection. The story centers on young Amaryllis, a child of wealth but little affection, who feels isolated by her parents' cold and fractured relationship. Her life takes a magical turn when she discovers a lush, secluded garden and encounters John Guido, a young boy who shares her intuitive love for the natural world. Together, they create a secret sanctuary among the flowers and greenery, finding the emotional sustenance and companionship that their domestic lives lack.

Gene Stratton-Porter's signature appreciation for the outdoors shines through in her vivid, lyrical descriptions of the landscape, painting a world where the simplicity of nature offers a cure for the loneliness of the heart. As the characters grow from children into adults, the memory of their shared garden and the bond formed within its walls remain a guiding light. "The Magic Garden" is a classic tale of innocence, romance, and the belief that beauty and kindness can bloom even in the most neglected soil. It stands as a testament to the author's legacy of capturing the spiritual link between humanity and the environment.

The Magic Garden was the most wonderful book ever!

THIS BOOK BY GENE STRATTON-PORTER HAPPENED TO COME TO ME BY CHANCE. IN MY HOME WE HAVE A GREAT NUMBER OF BOOKS. IT BEING THE SUMMER, I NEEDED SOMETHNG TO DO. I FOUND THIS BOOK AND STARTED READING. MY MOM COULD HARDLY PULL ME AWAY FROM IT. IT WAS SO GOOD I COULDN'T PUT IT DOWN. MY MOTHER SAID THAT WHEN SHE WAS ABOUT MY AGE SHE HAD READ IT AND LOVED IT AS I DID. I ENJOYED IT SO MUCH THAT I LET MY FRIENDS READ IT AND THEN MY SISTER-IN-LAW. AND JUST YESTERDAY I DISCOVERED THAT I HAD 2 COPIES OF THIS WONDERFUL BOOK. I THINK EVERYONE OF ANY AGE SHOULD READ THIS BOOK BECAUSE IT HAS A WONDERFUL PLOT AND NO MATTER HOW OLD YOU ARE IT WILL KEPT YOU INTERTAINED. I LOVE THIS BOOK!

A little unrealistic but still good

I really liked this book. It is about a five year old girl whose parents divorced. Her father was given custody of her older brother and her mother had custody of her. The mother hired some servents to take care of her and went to Europe.Leaving the girl with nobody who loved her and no other children to play with. The father lived in the city and her brother lived in a houseful of servents in the country. The children see eachother very rarely and the father even less often. At the begining of the book the girl runs away. She meets a nice boy and falls in love with him. When she is found her father realized that he did care for his children and made a nice home for them. However the girl never forgets the boy. The unrealistic part is that the girl goes for years without seeing or speaking to the boy and is still in love with him. Never even kissing another man.

A wonderful, old-fashioned romance!

This is a book handed down to me by my mother and it was handed down to her by her mother. I received it when I was 12 yrs. old and immediately fell in love with Amaryllis and John Guido. It is a book full of love, devotion and old fashioned values. It is indeed a fairy tale! It makes you laugh, cry and wish Amiryllis and John Guido all the happiness in the world. It offers a knight in shining armour and a true princess. It is not realistic, socially valuable, nor is there a "message" other then to believe in your dreams. Bravo!

This book is as magical as it's title.

The Magic Garden was the first book I ever read of Gene Stratton Porter. I was hooked. Although I was quite young at the time, I recognized the almost lyrical quality of the story of the poor little rich girl who meets the beautiful young musician for a magic day in a magic garden, when she runs away. Guido is truly a beautiful soul in a beautiful body. The young adolescent's love for the young girl and hers for him transcends time as they each remember one another and yearn and search. If you love the other books of Gene Stratton Porter, you will love this one. The setting is unique and they just don't write books like this anymore!
