True Irish history of female punishment

This book was recommended to me by a friend who was second generation Irish and a student of Irish history. The book, which is heartbreaking in its revelation of how young girls were treated in earlier centuries - incarcerated - by the strict behavioral codes of Catholic Ireland, stays in your mind. Told through the story of one Irish girl makes for a powerful and painful story. Good reading for learning about Irish history.
