A fun read

I stayed up until 3 a.m. to finish this book. This is a well-paced girl-meets-boy-life-explodes urban tale. The main character, Kate, is a 30-year-old single who is trying to make sense of her life, to regain her balance afer a jolting event 3 years earlier. While quietly working in NY, she gets a call that her father in London has had an emergency kidney transplant. She drops everything to fly back and must face all the drama that she left behind. Kate's internal life is brought palpably to the surface; the descriptions of how painful some of her loneliest moments are most authentic. Her friendships are complicated. She travels between London and New York, but most of the action takes place in London. The author hides a little too much for my taste at the beginning of the novel, but around halfway through, it's impossible to put this book down. All is resolved and explained in a most satisfying manner.

Kept Me Up Well Into The Night :)

This is the first book by Harriet Evans that I've read, but I can say without a doubt that I'll be reading her other books now. This novel was superb! The writing is wonderful and the characters have depth - you love them and hate them all at the right times. The story is about Kate Miller, who had a great life in London until one fateful day when everything changed. She now lives in New York and thinks she's happy - or okay with her life, at least - until she's called back to London when her father falls ill. Once Kate gets back to the U.K., she's drawn back in to her old life and must face old friends and work through all that's happened. The story unfolds in pieces - some in the present, some in the past and each chapter leads the reader a little closer to what actually happened in Kate's life. You'll find yourself rooting for her, yelling at her, and cheering her on. This book me kept me up well past bedtime, but it was well worth it. I can't wait to get my hands on another title by Evans.

Building up to it.

Much like in music, it built up to a climax, and it did it's job! Harriet Evans did an impressive job of writing an awesome love story. One like no other. I loved how she went back and forth between time periods. I find it annoying and distracting some times. At first I had trouble keeping up but became totally engrossed to the point of not wanting to put it down. Kate is just the average woman, her mother and father split. Her mother just walked out on her and her father. Kate is just a quiet girl, sits in the background. Her dream is to work at a magazine. Until one day a girl named Charly grabs her and claims her as her BFF. Her flatmate, Sean, she loves to death as a friend, until one day having drunk too much, they think they mean something else. This book is about love, friendships, parents and relationships in general. Harriet Evans is a wonderful writer and I love her style! I can't wait to read her other books. She has a knack for capturing what we think but don't say!

Loved it!

"The Love of Her Life" starts with the main character, Kate Miller, getting a phone call that her father in London is going to have surgery and that he would like to see Kate. So Kate, who came from London to New York City under mysterious circumstances, makes her first trip back to London in three years. The book follows Kate as she comes back and the story slowly reveals why she ran away from London. As the book goes on, Kate needs to decide where she needs to be in life. I found the book very easy to get into and I liked the slow unraveling of the reason why Kate felt she needed to leave London. When it is revealed, there is a part that is a bit predictable and I could see it from a mile away but there's another part of the reason that I didn't see coming. I found the book to be very enthralling and I read it in two days. I liked the character of Kate and I was hoping everything would work out for her. There is also a great cast of secondary characters. Like Kate's upstairs neighbor in London, Mr. Allan. I would definitely recommend this book to chick lit readers and I'll definitely be reading Harriet Evan's other novels.
