The Long Thread: Reflections on Environmental Thought Across Time

By Alan Bennett

In The Long Thread, Australian author and retired adjunct professor Alan Bennett offers a sweeping, thought-provoking exploration of humanity's evolving relationship with nature. Drawing on decades of reflection, scholarship, and lived experience, Bennett traces the flow of environmental thought from ancient philosophy to modern ecological consciousness.
This richly woven narrative journeys through the insights of Greek thinkers like Plato and Aristotle, the theological reflections of Augustine and Aquinas, the rational clarity of Enlightenment philosophers such as Locke and Kant, and the urgent voices of today's environmental ethicists. Along the way, it considers Indigenous wisdom, scientific revolutions, literary influences, and the ethical demands of the Anthropocene.
Each chapter unpacks a key theme, such as nature's moral status, the tension between consumption and sustainability, or the spiritual dimensions of ecological care, connecting the past to the present and offering thoughtful case studies, historical episodes, and practical reflections. The book does not preach; it provokes, invites, and challenges readers to reflect on how ideas have shaped our treatment of the Earth, and what responsibilities we now face in a time of crisis.
