The Long Rain
Dr. Caleb Ashworth spent eleven years and the ruins of his marriage building a time machine, all so he could stand in a Galilean crowd and hear Jesus speak. He gets the destination right. He gets the century catastrophically wrong.
The device throws him not into first-century Judea, but into a world before the Flood - a civilization more technologically advanced than his own twenty-first century, and far more violent. Within hours of arrival, a mob beats him nearly to death in the street and leaves him for dead. He's found, and saved, by a quiet, aging man named Noah, who nurses him back to health and tells him, plainly, what the rest of the world refuses to believe: that judgment is coming for a civilization that has grown too corrupt to warn any other way, and that he has spent decades building a vessel to survive it.
As Caleb heals, He falls for a kind young woman in the city named Zara - only to learn that the ark holds exactly eight souls, and not one more, however good her heart. A ruthless warlord named Lamech, drawn from the violent line of Cain, wants Zara as well. And he will stop at nothing to have her.
As the rain finally comes, Caleb must choose what he can save, what he can't, and what he's willing to risk to protect the one family that showed him mercy in a world that showed him none. The device carries him one last time - not backward to escape the flood, but forward to the destination he set out for eleven years earlier.
What he finds waiting for him there closes a circle that began on the very first page, in a way that no one saw coming.
