Book Overview

The Life Span: Human Development for Helping Professionals, 5th Edition, provides an in-depth look at the science of human development, highlighting theories and research that have useful applications for individuals working in fields such as education, counseling, and social work. The main purpose of this book is to provide the reader with information that can be translated into professional best practice applications. Throughout, the text reflects the contemporary view that life span development is a process deeply embedded within and inseparable from the context of family, social network, and culture.

Because the book is designed for graduate students, most topics, especially those that have special relevance to helping professionals, are covered in greater depth than in a typical life span text. The expanded coverage of research in these areas will enhance readers' understanding of the scientific basis for application to practice.

Great textbook, too big though

I got this textbook for my grad class. It has lots of information on human development from conception through the old age. All information is backed up by current research. My class is over but I will keep this book for my own further reading and looking back if I need some information on development The only negative side is that this book is very big and heavy; difficult to just casually take to a coffee shop. Then again, perhaps it is not a coffee shop book for most :)

Excellence in Educational Materials

This is the textbook for my Human Development Course. The material is informative, well-presented, and fascinating. Recommend it to anyone interested in Human Lifespan.

GREAT TRANSACTION

Item was just as described. Item was shipped quickly and arrived in perfect condition.

Complete and Fascinating

This thorough textbook is designed to teach principles of human development from birth to death. With an extensive and up-to-date research base, the book effectively provides an array of information from which anyone can learn. I find myself quoting information from the book on a regular basis because the content is so interesting and useful. There is solid online support to help students learn the information. The book's emphasis on professionals in psychology could be better adapted to profesisonals working in special education as one of the helping professions. And whle the authors have a fluent writing style, the print is too small to read easily. The publisher used small print with wide text lines (instead of consistent columns), color behind print for poor contrast, and little white space between lines, which means that the professor who wants to adapt to learners with visual challenges will need to find another book. Excellent information, which is downright fascinating.

Very professional

Up-to-date, thoughtful and incisive. This textbook reads easily and provides excellent theoretical perspectives on the development of human psychology. I recommend it as a basis for any advanced education in the field.
