The Last Place

By Rex Harlan

They compose acoustic portraits of every world they destroy - beautiful recordings of civilizations about to die. Then they call it mercy.
Fleet Chief James Malwyn doesn't inspire people. He solves problems. With eleven ships, a crew of five species, and fourteen sheets of graph paper, he's identified something no one else has seen: the Penitent advance bends. Their entire military operation routes around a region of space that shouldn't matter - unless what's inside it is the most important thing they have.
When a failed Penitent self-destruct leaves a survivor - the first ever captured alive - James's daily conversations with the prisoner called Speaker expose a civilization far more complex than the monolithic threat the Protectorate has been fighting. The Penitent record the sound of every world before they sterilize it. They consider consciousness itself a disease. And somewhere in their suppressed founding texts, their own ancestors asked the question that might unravel everything: Does the Work create silence, or does it create deafness?
Five ships. Sixty crew. Three months in uncharted space. James is taking his salvage fleet into the empty place on the map to find the answer - because the answer might be the only weapon that works against an enemy you can't outfight, only out-think.
The Last Place is Book Three of The Penitent War - military science fiction for readers who want their space opera with philosophical depth, found-family crews, and an engineer protagonist who saves the galaxy with graph paper and the stubborn refusal to stop building things.
