The gargoyle was never meant to wake.
For centuries, Morcant stood silent atop the ruins of Blackspire Cathedral - the last stone guardian in a kingdom that no longer believed in magic, monsters, or the old roads beneath the world. Then a bell rings in the dark, and Morcant opens his eyes to a land that has forgotten him.
The kingdoms of men are crumbling into superstition and greed. Ancient seals are failing. Dead cities stir beneath rain and root. Somewhere below the world, a terrible king trapped behind the First Door has begun to whisper once more.
Reluctantly joined by Elira Vetch - a sharp-tongued thief with a talent for surviving impossible situations - and Muckle, a mud-splattered goblin whose bravery is exceeded only by his tendency to bite dangerous things, Morcant sets out across a broken realm of drowned palaces, haunted forests, sleeping mountains, and forgotten kingdoms carved beneath the earth.
But the further they travel, the clearer one truth becomes:
The last gargoyle may not simply be guarding the door.
He may be the lock itself.
