The story revolves around the protection of the Sacred Lake. Stonehenge, the unique World Heritage Site also provides a constant theme. The reason for the Henge's existence is explained together with its purpose, construction and preservation. Importantly this book offers an alternative to present day thinking which suggests that Stonehenge itself was the premier religious object of the ancients: it was not; it was a shrine dedicated to the worship of the Sacred Lake. The position of the Lake is all important; its western edge is the Clifton Downs in Bristol; it stretched 40 miles to the city of Salisbury in the east. It is bounded on its northern edge by the Cotswold Hills and its southern boundary is formed by the impressive Mendip Hills in Somerset. The Lake was very large, covering more than six hundred square miles; but also special; it is a hot water lake and notably the largest lake by far in Europe
