When sixteen-year-old Tammi Campbell sees Kurt Hutchinson, the high school pariah, at her shrink's office, she's not sure how to react. What do you say to a boy whose twin brother was the assailant in the school shooting last fall? But as they begin talking, they find common ground, and one day decide to skip out of their sessions and go to the local coffee shop instead. There, Tammi meets an Asian skater boy named Connor, his super cute friend, Levi, and Tallulah (Lula), a girl Tammi only wishes she could be like.

After sharing their problems, the five develop a bond and form their own therapy group, The Kryptonite Club, to protect themselves from the evil outside world. Things get complicated when Kurt is diagnosed with PTSD, Tammi and Levi break Code Number 4 by getting romantically involved, and Lula hooks up with a guy they all know is trouble. As summer draws to a close and Lula and Connor prepare for college, they realize they must disband the group since they'll all be going separate ways.

But when Kurt disappears after a party, they forge together on a mission to save him. Before it's too late.
