deeply compelling read

A beautiful and compelling read. Story of a young Jewish girl whose father moves the family from Winnipeg to Odessa during the Depression to find a people's paradise but is instead entangled in the horrors of war, anti-Semitism and Stalinism. Told on a very personal level, the heavy historical events which tear her family apart are treated with a light touch so they don't overwhelm the narrative. Am going to recommend to my book club as there are so many layers to examine.
