Unique Recipes

"Over the last 20 years researchers have found that people who eat the most fruits and vegetables have the lowest rates of cancer and other diseases." ~ pg. 10 Juicing changed Cherie Calbom's life. Before she started juicing she suffered from chronic fatigue syndrome. Juicing is not inexpensive, but what is your health worth to you? For Cherie Calbom, juicing is an essential part of life. After just a week of juicing I now agree. Why didn't I make my own juices before? Cherie Calbom teaches a lot of essential things in this helpful book. She teaches you to leave the white pithy part of citrus fruit so you can benefit from the vitamin C and bioflavonoids it contains. She advises you to peel mangos and papayas and to never juice rhubarb and carrot greens. She also explained why the juice turns brown when you try to reserve some for the next day. It has oxidized. The only thing I found strange in this book was the instruction to "scrub a pineapple." Wouldn't it be simpler just to peel it? That is what I normally do. There is also some advice about rubbing ginger root on your scalp to help your hair grow. Carrot juice is also supposed to make your hair shiny. There is a chapter on how to get rid of cellulite and how to lose weight. For expectant mothers, they may enjoy reading about how to have a healthy pregnancy with juicing. I was also surprised to find a chapter on how to get pets to eat/drink juices. While there are not a lot of recipes there are enough to keep you busy for quite some time. There are recipes for creative juices, smoothies and freezes. Here are some examples: Tangerine squeeze - pineapple, tangerines and lime Sparkling Cranberry Apple - apples, cranberries, lemon and mineral water Spicy Peaches and Cream - peaches, apples, ginger, yogurt, vanilla, honey and cinnamon Spring Tonic - tomato, cucumber, asparagus and lemon Triple C - cabbage, carrots and celery The recipes seem to be a little more gourmet than other books I've read recently. I could tell that Cherie Calbom has a sense of adventure and loves testing recipes. In fact she talks about making six smoothies all in one day. The only thing this book doesn't seem to talk about is stevia which I find essential when making some juices that are a bit more tart. There is a short section on juice fasting with instructions for how to use the recipes in this book for one to three days. I'd suggest you get a book on the subject. I just ordered: Juice Fasting and Detoxification: Use the Healing Power of Fresh Juice to Feel Young and Look Great : The Fastest Way to Restore Your Health. ~The Rebecca Review

Good, but nothing new

I give this book 4 stars because the information presented is excellent and well organized. However, much of the information in this book appeared previously in Calbom's book "Juicing For Life". If you own Juicing For Life, then this book is of somewhat reduced value to you; however, its prevailing method of organization makes it a helpful companion.Included in this book are the many good recipes expected in such a volume, plus a series of nutritional essays about the role of juicing in a healthy lifestyle. Cherie Calbom also provides descriptions and guidelines for several different types of diets, from weightloss to gallbladder cleansing. If this is your first book on juicing, this book is excellent. If this is your fifth, its a handy one to have. If this book is your tenth on the subject, then you likely have much of this information already. All things considered, this is a quality book at a great price, and a welcomed addition to any juicing library.
