Louisa Susannah Wells was the daughter of "an eminent American loyalist" who fled America during the Revolution to make her home in England. She tells us that everyone on the ship that carried her away was "banished," although it's more likely they were finding things a bit hot in America and unsuitable to their loyalist sympathies to King George.Nevertheless, this woman tells a wonderful tale of crossing the Atlantic. You need not agree with her political persuasion to find this book amusing and fascinating, as well as illuminating the life at sea for those not born to sail in the 18th century. Susannah is snobbish, sympathetic, funny, and clearly well-educated.
