He will bed her... Elise Carlton is looking forward to having her freedom. Years as a trophy wife have left her wary. But there is one man to whom she is not immune.... For revenge and for pleasure Vincente Farnese is rich and devastatingly handsome, his own special brand of dark Italian temptation But it is no coincidence that Vincente has sought out Elise. What will she do when she discovers he wants her only for revenge?
I don't read too much by Lucy Gordon; she's hit or miss, inconsistent- making her just okay as an author in my personal ranking system. Many unknowns in this tale- secrets Gordon develops over time, but on cue! Nice rhythm. The protagonists, Elise Carlton and Vincente Farnese are interesting characters; strong, intelligent, sharp thinkers- witty. I enjoyed their banter and one-up-manship! Definitely a scoring system going on to determine who is in control- and when. The coldness- the absolute detachment and viciousness of their characters when challenged was a bit daunting. Disturbing, really! While a result of personal pain and disappointment- the coldness was too absolute- and too long- to serve the book well. It pulled my heartstrings in spots. I did begin to detach, loose interest as the numbness Elise finds in her disillusionment consumes too much of her character. The resolution Vincente brings about is rather thrust upon the reader! It worked for me- but might not have for some. I chose to accept it in the interest of a happy read. It's not a warm and fuzzy read- nor is the carnal side of their relationship inspiring. The intrigue and psyches of the characters have to carry it! I enjoyed it- and recommend it to those seeking something different.
Surprisingly Good

This was a surprisingly good story about, for a change, mature man and woman who acted like adults. The woman was not a doormat but a feisty woman who could keep the hero on his toes, and the man wasn't a completely insensitive or cruel jerk. Their emotional ups and downs seem realistic, and how they come to resolve their differences was also realistic. A good story overall.
One Feisty Heroine!

I really enjoy Harlequin Presents overall, however, there are times when an author tells a different type of story. This is one of those times. In Elise's and Vincente's story we see the toughness of a heroine and at moments the weakness of a hero, which is seldom written about in romance novels. The story is very sensual with many touching moments and of course twists and turns as they work out their "happily ever after". Enjoy!
