In a flash of lightning, Count Pietro Bagnelli sees a young woman standing outside his palazzo, a battered suitcase at her feet. This solitary count has turned his back on the world, but he can't turn his back on this bedraggled waif.... Ruth has returned to Venice to uncover lost memories, yet finds comfort with this proudly damaged count. As Carnivale sweeps through the city, drama and passion ignite and secrets unravel....
5 stars is a rarity for me. This book is a wonderful example of just how GREAT romance can be. The story is of two people: Ruth, an English woman who has been viciously beaten and is trying to put her life back together again, and Pietro, an Italian man whose life has become bleak since his family died and who needs TLC to come back. They both start out in shadow and together they move to light. There are good side characters (such as his staff and dog) and a wonderful setting (venice in the winter). A good amount of time is covered in the story without making it seem rushed. At the same time, it's enough time for the healing and love between the two characters to believably grow. I read this story in a Sunday morning haze. It's a keeper; I'll probably read it again and again. (*)>
