Martin, introduced in Loft Island, has heard nothing from Bronwen in Chepstow and visits her, to find her father violently dismissive of him. The man's treatment of Bronwen and later of his wife come to a head; they leave and he is left alone with their young housekeeper. The repercussions don't stop either Martin or the two generations of the Loft family making progress with their plans, though money continues to be a problem. Ted and Ian Rawle, Martin's younger brothers, enter the story and provide light relief, and gradually for most of them, success beckons. It is not without its traumas, though.
