The Iron Bastion
May 18, 1565. At the sun-baked crossroads of the Mediterranean, the horizon turns white with two hundred war galleys.
Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, ruler of three continents and commander of an empire spanning from the Danube to the Persian Gulf, has dispatched the largest amphibious invasion armada assembled since antiquity. His objective is absolute annihilation: sweep the Knights of Saint John from their barren limestone fortress of Malta, seize control of the central sea lanes, and open the road to Rome, Naples, and Vienna.
Against thirty-five thousand elite Ottoman Janissaries, veteran Spahi cavalry, and the ruthless corsairs of North Africa stands an impossibly outnumbered garrison. Led by seventy-year-old Grand Master Jean Parisot de Valette, a former galley slave who bears on his back the whip scars of Turkish oars, fewer than six hundred knights and four thousand Maltese peasant militia make their stand on a sun-scorched rock without rivers, timber, or hope of easy rescue.
What followed over one hundred and sixteen blistering summer days became one of the most ferocious, desperate, and strategically decisive military struggles in human history. From the suicidal twenty-eight-day defense of Fort Saint Elmo to the subterranean mine wars of Birgu, the midnight swimmer battles in the shallows, and the seventy-year-old Grand Master charging with a pike into a smoking breach, The Iron Bastion drops readers directly into the heart of the Renaissance crucible.
Drawn from day-by-day eyewitness diaries, declassified council registers, and sixteenth-century artillery manifests, bestselling military historian Julian Devereux delivers a pulse-pounding, authoritative masterclass in epic narrative history. This is the story of ordinary men and women who refused to surrender an inch of their living stone, proving that courage, engineering, and unbroken resolve can shatter the greatest empire on earth.
Step inside the breach. The battle for the Mediterranean begins now.
