Because a machine need not hate you to be dangerous. It need not love you to be valuable. It may behave as though it wants something without wanting anything at all. It may understand more than its mechanism seems to permit. Or its astonishing competence may tempt us to see a mind where there is only machinery.

The uncomfortable possibility is that we may not yet possess the categories required to tell the difference.

The Intelligence Trap is for readers who are dissatisfied with both extremes of the AI debate. Namely the insistence that increasingly capable machines are just software, and the equally premature conviction that something recognisably human is awakening inside them. It asks neither that we worship the machine nor dismiss it.
