The Incredible Queen Amelia: For your reading enjoyment

Ever since Amelia was six and her mom left her dad, Tony, who was not a great guy, Amelia has enjoyed an entirely normal life. Her mother, Marge (warm-- but with a flair for the dramatic ) and her stepdad, George (a solid, but irritable, partner in a midtown law firm), have Amelia set up in a nice home with plenty of organic food in the refrigerator and wireless that nearly always works. Amelia loooooves, and couldn't live without, her small posse of loyal, brilliant, and idiosyncratic friends: Ali, Margo, Sophie and John. Her adventure begins when the friends have matching dreams about a particular two headed serpent followed by some strange noises on Margo's roof. A quite frightening visit upstairs with Margo confirms that something weird and otherworldly is definitely going on and if Amelia wasn't absolutely convinced that things have taken a decidedly metaphysical turn, a visit from a large black bird who delivers a golden ball that turns into a tree and grows up through her ceiling, proves that they have. Amelia's former babysitter Francesca encourages her to climb up the tree believing that it is Amelia's destiny (Francesca knows about these things because she was born on a pig farm in Brazil). Following her advice, Amelia ascends the tree, through her ceiling, to her roof at night where, pushing her way through a door that didn't used to be there, she enters the magical world of Amaranta. Much to Amelia's surprise, the people of The Kingdom of Amaranta believe that she is their queen, as the old queen dies before her, and that she will save them from the encroaching Serpents. Amelia is not sure she is cut out for the job but is too confused and too polite to refuse. Despite her trepidation Amelia, and entirely normal and non-heroic person, manages to keep her wits about her as she recovers her friends one by one (who, thank God, have all found their way to Amaranta too), and together they navigate the thrilling, eccentric, dazzling and sometimes terrifying, adventure they find there. As Amelia, Margo and Ali (they find, and rescue, John who tending bar for the Serpents later on in the story) explore and seek to understand this magical new world the friends meet ogres who are terribly sensitive, and compelled to work all the time to exhaustion because of cultural ogre norms, jaguars that can be ridden into space, falafel guys who are forming an underground resistance movement, the previous queen, Mnrfa, who appears when they need help, and then disappears again when they are safe, and The Serpents who seek world domination through spreading greed and fear and eating people. In the end, the heroic Amelia, wielding an AK-47 and her powerful intuition, manages to save the Kingdom with help from her friends and an army of ogres. The Incredible Queen Amelia is a magical realistic tale about three Brooklyn girls and one charming Brooklyn boy who discover that no matter how clever you are when things get weird enough that nothing you have ever learned seems to apply, only bravery, intuition, and your best friends, are reliable. I wrote a well-read, award-winning blog called Irreverent Fitness and The Incredible Queen Amelia was chosen for a selective writers group in Brooklyn.
