I bought this cookbook as a gift for my sister. I own the origonal blue book edition (1995) printed by The Southwestern company and it is one of my favorite cookbooks. I was happy to find that this new edition is available on-line, because the prior edition had to be ordered from the company or bought from a traveling sales person. This version duplicates the origonal and lists all recipes via food topic or title, such as abalone, almond, ambrosia etc. Every cookbook collection should have The Illustrated Encyclopedia of American Cooking!

This is the best cookbook ever! We have a collection of cookbooks, this is by far the most used, most stained, dogeared and worn of them all. Well organized, easy to use with dozens of recepies we use REGULARLY! This is the go to book for any kitchen. We just bought 2, one for each of our adult children. A great broadbased do everything book, a must have for every kitchen!

I, too, received my copy in 1995 by a young travelling salesperson! Oh, my! When I started browsing through it, I was hooked! Even living alone with no one else to cook for, this book has been my saving grace in the kitchen! No more wondering what to do with all this _______(squash, rice, cucumbers, bananas, tomatoes, whatever!)__ !! It's the only cookbook I use!
First Book Ever Owned and STILL Thrilled

This book came to me by way of a young travelling salesgirl. She was selling a subscription to a cookbook of the month club and I was living on my own, for the first time. Knowing NOTHING about cooking I thought it couldn't hurt to join. For signing, The Illustrated Encyclopedia of American Cooking was mine to keep. Not sure if I still own any of the other books from the club, but I still have this one and so glad I kept it! I learned a lot of basic recipes and grew to love to prepare food. As time has passed I have become a well seasoned cook and this is still my primary resource. The wonderful recipes are easy to follow. Organized by food and not by course, it is great to find any recipe that you might fancy and rarely is there a "hard to find" ingredient. There's a later printing that has received RAVE reviews but don't let that sway you from this, original printed version, for I highly recommend this book to ALL! It's a great first book or a solid resource for someone with lots of cooking hours.
