Book Overview

Included on The Skimm's 2020 list of Eight Books Both You and Mom Will Love

"The sleeper hit of the pandemic . . . . There is no escapism like reading about a nearly middle-aged woman embarking on a glittering, global love affair with a thoughtful young sex god . . . . It's electric, triumphant to read." --Vogue.com

"An OMG page-turner." --Gabrielle Union

Sol?ne Marchand, the thirty-nine-year-old owner of an art gallery in Los Angeles, is reluctant to take her daughter, Isabelle, to meet her favorite boy band. But since her divorce, she's more eager than ever to be close to Isabelle. The last thing Sol?ne expects is to make a connection with one of the members of the world-famous August Moon. But Hayes Campbell is clever, winning, confident, and posh, and the attraction is immediate. That he is all of twenty years old further complicates things.

What begins as a series of clandestine trysts quickly evolves into a passionate and genuine relationship. It is a journey that spans continents as Sol?ne and Hayes navigate each other's worlds: from stadium tours to international art fairs to secluded hideaways in Paris and Miami. For Sol?ne, it is a reclaiming of self, as well as a rediscovery of happiness and love. When Sol?ne and Hayes' romance becomes a viral sensation, and both she and her daughter become the target of rabid fans and an insatiable media, Sol?ne must face how her romantic life has impacted the lives of those she cares about most.

A main character so toxic I only wanted her to get away from her victim.

The Idea of You is possibly the worst book I ever read. I’ll never read anything from this author again. I question her moral compass if her goal was to make her female character even a tiny bit likable. It’s definitely the most unlikable main character that I’ve ever read. There is no defending her poor decision making that she continues to do throughout the book. The age gap is too big (mostly to do with the very young age of the “man” in her life). She knows what she’s doing will be devastating to her child and yet she continues. A recently divorced woman can prioritize herself and “get her groove back” without turning into a monster. All I could think about was that I wanted her away from him ASAP so that he could hopefully continue to mature without more damage than has already be inflicted on him in his short life. The movie fixed all of the issues I have with this book, so if you’d like to see this story and not feel sick the whole time, skip the book and watch the movie.

Loved the book

Loved the book, couldn’t put it down. Hated the ending, wanted more. Hoping for a sequel with a happy ending.

I loved this book!!!

This book is brilliantly written! I fell in love with Hayes and Solene and am so hoping that author Robinne Lee blesses us with a sequel! There’s definitely more to this love story!

It's always fun to see how good books get adapted for the screen. But sometimes, this happens before we've had the chance to read the source material. Or maybe we just want to reread the book before we watch. Here are sixteen of the books behind the buzziest book-to-screen adaptations.
