There's a lot going on in the book-to-screen world right now. We're excited to watch, but first we want to read (or even reread), because, as we all know, the book is (almost) always better. Here are sixteen of the books that inspired the latest, greatest adaptations. Order your copy of the source material so you can read before you watch.

Mustang Miracle by Humberto G. Garcia

The Long Game is available for purchase on various streaming services

This book tells the true story of five young Mexican-American caddies in the South Texas desert who were recruited to form the San Felipe High School Golf Team. Despite having inferior equipment and no formal training, they captured the State title competing against all-white, wealthier schools. The inspiring film adaptation stars Jay Hernandez, Jaina Lee Ortiz, and Dennis Quaid.

Stolen by Ann-Helén Laestadius

Based on real events, this spellbinding Swedish novel follows a young indigenous woman as she struggles to defend her family's reindeer herd and culture amidst xenophobia, climate change, and a devious hunter whose targeted kills are considered mere theft in the eyes of the law. It's a searing coming-of-age story that reads like a love song to a disappearing natural world.

Pretty Little Liars by Sara Shepard

Pretty Little Liars: Summer School is streaming now on Max

This series of YA mystery novels follows the lives of four teenage girls, former best friends whose clique fell apart after their leader, Alison, went missing. A few years later, they start getting threatening messages from a mysterious sender called "A." This newest spinoff features a new cast and amps up the horror and raunch, but fans of the original series will spot plenty of Easter eggs.

A Man in Full by Tom Wolfe

The setting is Atlanta, Georgia—a racially mixed, late-twentieth-century boomtown full of fresh wealth and wily politicians. Charles Croker, once a college football star, is now a late-middle-aged businessman whose outsized ego has at last hit up against reality. The limited series, created by David E. Kelley (Big Little Lies) stars Jeff Daniels, Diane Lane, and Lucy Liu.

The Idea of You by Robinne Lee

Solène Marchand is just shy of forty when she reluctantly takes her daughter, Isabelle, to see her favorite boy band. The last thing Solène expects is to fall for one of the members of the band. Alex Rider: Nightshade by Anthony Horowitz

The twelfth installment of this thrilling YA espionage series follows the world's greatest teen spy as he sets off to infiltrate a new and sinister organisation known only as Nightshade. When Alex discovers they've planned a mysterious attack on London, he will stop at nothing to save his home city. The intriguing TV series stars Otto Farrant, Stephen Dillane, and Vicky McClure.

Dragonkeeper by Carole Wilkinson

Ancient China, Han Dynasty—A slave girl saves the life of an aging dragon and escapes her brutal master. The Image of You by Adele Parks

In theaters now

Anna and Zoe are twins, identical in appearance, opposite in personality, and nothing can come between them. But when Anna meets the charismatic Nick and decides he's the one, Zoe is concerned. Certain Nick is yet another in a string of liars, Zoe decides she must protect her twin from betrayal—at any cost. The film stars Sasha Pieterse, Parker Young, and Mira Sorvino.

Planet of the Apes by Pierre Boulle

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is in theaters now

Before seeing the newest addition to this epic franchise, read the original 1963 science fiction novel about three human explorers from Earth who happen upon a planet where a civilization of highly intelligent, cultured great apes dominate over humans who live as savage beasts. The newest addition by director Wes Ball stars Owen Teague, Freya Allan, and William H. Macy.

The Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice

Interview With a Vampire, Season Two is streaming now on AMC

This beloved gothic vampire series revolves around the 18th-century nobleman-turned-vampire Lestat de Lioncourt. Hypnotic, shocking, and sensual, the novels offer stories of danger and flight, of love and loss, of suspense and resolution, and the extraordinary power of the senses. The bold, campy series stars Jacob Anderson, Sam Reid, and Eric Bogosian.

Romancing Mr. Bridgerton by Julia Quinn

Bridgerton, Season Three premieres on Netflix May 16

It's the fourth novel in the saucy Bridgertons series that serves as the inspiration for season three of sizzling adaptation from Shonda Rhimes. Each Regency-set romance focuses on one of eight close-knit siblings from one family in London's high society. This one, starring Nicola Coughlan and Luke Newton, features the love story between Colin Bridgerton and Penelope Featherington.

Thelma the Unicorn by Aaron Blabey

Coming to Netflix May 17

Thelma is an ordinary little horse who dreams of being a unicorn. Then in a pink and glitter-filled moment of fate, Thelma's wish comes true—but at an unexpected cost. In this animated adaptation, written by Jared and Jerusha Hess (Napoleon Dynamite), Thelma (voiced by the great Brittany Howard) aspires to be a famous singer. Also featuring Will Forte, Jon Heder, and Jemaine Clement.

Garfield by Jim Davis

Coming to theaters May 24

In this new animated adaptation, the world-famous, Monday-hating, lasagna-loving indoor cat (voiced by Chris Pratt) is about to have a wild outdoor adventure. After an unexpected reunion with his long-lost father, a scruffy street cat called Vic (Samuel L. Jackson), Garfield and his canine friend Odie are forced from their perfectly pampered life into a hilarious, high-stakes heist.

Robot Dreams by Sara Varon

Coming to theaters May 31

This whimsical, nearly wordless graphic novel tells the story of a dog and robot who become friends. After a trip to the beach leaves the robot rusted and immobilized in the sand, the dog must return alone to the life they shared as both cling to their memories and the hope that they will be reunited. The much-lauded adaptation received an Oscar-nomination for Best Animated Film.

Queen's Gambit by Elizabeth Freemantle

Firebrand comes to theaters June 21

Not to be confused with Walter Tevis's novel about a pill-popping orphan who becomes a chess prodigy, this historical drama imagines the story of the sixth wife of the dangerously powerful Henry VIII. Widowed for the second time at age thirty-one, Katherine Parr hopes at last to marry for love. Instead, she receives a royal proposal she can't refuse. The film stars Alicia Vikander and Jude Law.

It Ends With Us by Colleen Hoover

Coming to theaters June 21

Lily has had to work hard to get where she is. When she meets Ryle, a gorgeous neurosurgeon, it seems too good to be true. But Ryle isn't the easiest person to love and questions about her relationship start to creep in. When her first love suddenly reappears in her life, everything she has built with Ryle is threatened. The much-anticipated film stars Blake Lively and Jenny Slate.
