Ida Mae and Oscar Taylor Blackburn lived and worked in Minneapolis for most of the years of their long marriage. They met and were married in Kansas shortly after he emigrated from England, and she from South Carolina. While Ida Mae ran a haberdashery and antique store, Oscar worked as an engraver of silver, watches and bookplates. Together, they collected over 3,200 bookplates that range in age from the latter part of the sixteenth century through the first half of the twentieth century. Most bookplates in their collection are from England and America, but a few are by French, Canadian and Australian engravers. In the Collection are bookplates that once belonged to kings, queens and presidents, scientists and mathematicians, artists and writers, and actors and musicians. Among them are plates engraved by William Hogarth, Paul Revere, Frederick Remington, Rockwell Kent and Aubrey Beardsley. Plates for George Washington, Charles Dickens, William Penn, Albert Einstein and the three Roosevelt's are included in the Collection. The bulk of the bookplates, however, were commissioned by ordinary citizens who wished to signify ownership of their books.
