Colonization of the United States To better understand the process of American independence, it is important to know a little more about the colonization of this territory. The English began to colonize the region in the 17th century. The colony received two types of colonization with marked differences: Northern colonies: a region colonized by European Protestants, mainly English, who fled religious persecution. They came to North America to make the region a prosperous place to live for their families. Also called New England, the region underwent a settlement with the following characteristics: free labor, trade-based economy, small farms and household production. Colonies of the South: Colonies like Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina and Georgia have undergone a colonization of exploitation. They were explored by England and had to follow the colonial pact. They were based on large estates, slave labor, production for export to the mainland and monoculture.
